Battle of Ramsej

Near Nashik, there is a fort called Ramsej about 5 miles from Pindori (Dindori). Lord Shri Ram used to go to rest at this forest, and there it is named after him Ramsej. Most of the forts in Sahyadri range such as, Sinhagad, Pratapgad are in dense forests, situated in mountain valleys. But Ramsej is on a flat and open ground, there were no trees and jungle. But it is located on a very big hill. The only fort near Ramsej is Trimbakgad fort but it is also at a distance of 2 Km. In view of all this situation, the fort was very lonely.

Battle with Shahabuddin Khan at Ramsej

Aurangzeb wanted to conquer the fort in a day then wanted to capture the Maratha Forts like Trimbakgad, Ahivant, Markanda and Salher. So he sent his commander Shahabuddin Khan to conquer the fort. Shahabuddin Khan told he would capture it in a day and then went with an army 10,000 soldiers against 600 Marathas to conquer the fort. There were huge ammunition and guns. At the fort there were only 600 Marathas with the fortress named Surajji Jade. They were brave, stubborn and mighty. And also there were no guns on the fort.

Sambhaji Maharaja himself had concentrated and provided abundant ammunition at every fort. The fortress and the gardener made wooden guns and wooden cannons made of cannons made of leather. They started shooting down artillery from the fort. When the Mughal forces tried to climb up they threwed huge stones over them. It crossed 6 Months but Shahabuddin could not win anything. So he built a huge wooden tower or wooden dam same as the height of the fort from the trees of surrounding forests. He built it because he wanted Mughal soldiers to climb on it and place guns over it and then fire at the fort. They built huge bastion with 40 guns and 400 Mughal soldiers. Marathas fired cannons over it and then it was lighted and was fully burned by the Marathas. 2 years were passed but Shahabuddin couldn't win anything so he was called back by Aurangzeb.

Battle with Fateh Khan at Ramsej

After Shahabuddin Aurangzeb sent a jijarbaj sardar named Fateh Khan. He came with thousand of troops. He mounted a heavy attack on Ramsej but nothing happened. So he ordered his troops to march towards the fort but when they came close big boulders were thrown on them by the Marathas which killed many soldiers on the spot. so then the army retreated.

The guns of Fateh Khan could not reach to the fort, but a cannon ball can reach to the fort. So then he fired cannon balls to the fort which caused many towers and embankments to collapse. Fateh Khan was very happy to see this. But the next morning the Marathas again build the collapsed towers and embankments. Fateh Khan surprised to see this but his anger was growing. All the Marathas worked very hard to again build the towers and embankments in one night.

Then one day Fateh Khan started attacking the main gate of the fort by cannon balls. The sound of the cannons was so loud that all the Marathas of the fort came to the main tower. But they were laughing on the Mughals because not a single cannon ball could reach to the fort. All of them burned in the direction of the fort. But the plan of Fateh Khan was different he said his general to select few soldiers and leave for the back of the fort. And climb up the fort stubby steps without sound at all. And then enter in the fort through ropes and capture the fort. Taking advantage of the darkness a lot of soldiers started climbing up. Surya Jade was next to the main tower watching Fateh Khan's cannons. He was a mighty warrior of Sambhaji Maharaj. He had a doubt in his mind that why Fateh Khan is again and again firing cannons in this direction even though not a single cannon ball could reach the fort. Then he took some Marathas with him to the walls of the fort. They saw some Mughal soldiers climbing up in the darkness of night. Then they started throwing huge boulders and firewood on them. All the Marathas then came and started throwing huge boulders and firewood on the Mughal soldiers. The Mughals started crying for their lives. Some were killed due to huge boulders and some burned in firewood. Fateh Khan then retreated with his army.
